Dirt (styled D!rt for logos) is an American television serial presented by the FX network. It premiered on January 2, 2007 and stars Courteney Cox Arquette as Lucy Spiller, the editor-in-chief of the first-of-it's-kind "Glossy tabloid" magazine DirtNow, which was previously two separate publications: Dirt! (a tabloid) and Now (a glossy magazine).
The show centers around the publication of the DirtNow magazine and the lives of Spiller and her long time friend Don Konkey, a paparazzi and functioning schizophrenic who is deeply loyal to her. Also included are the lives of some of the celebrities covered by the magazine, including Holt McLaren and Julia Mallory, a celebrity couple.
Summary
A radically cast-against-type Courteney Cox was the star of the wickedly satirical FX drama series Dirt. Cox was cast as Lucy Spiller, the ruthless, conniving editor of the tell-all tabloid magazines "Dirt" and "Now." Dedicated to the proposition that absolutely nothing was sacred in the world of celebrity journalism, Lucy mercilessly drove her minions -- and herself -- to dredge up as many negative and injurious facts as possible about the rich and famous of the entertainment industry, deploying bribery, arm-twisting, blackmail, and any other nasty means at her disposal. Lucy's chief partner in grime was the magazine's "functional schizophrenic" ace photographer Don Konkey (Ian Hart), whose many bizarre personality quirks included a lengthy romance with a dead woman. As if to tweak the noses of the real-life "tabs" who'd made life hell for former Friends leading lady Courteney Cox and her film-star husband, David Arquette (with whom she co-produced the series), Dirt included a subplot involving the relentless hounding of actor Holt McLaren (Josh Stewart) and his sitcom-star girlfriend Julia Mallory (Laura Allen) -- who, in a perverse comic twist, were depicted in a decidedly unsympathetic and unflattering light. Others in the cast were Timothy Bottoms as megalomanic magazine owner Gibson Home and Jeffrey Nordling as soulless publisher Brent Barrow. Debuting January 2, 2007, Dirt was, amazingly enough, put together by a subsidiary of Disney. (Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide)
A 13 episode second season was announced on May 8, 2007. It's set to begin airing on March 2, 2008, however, due to the 2007 WGA strike, only seven of episodes have been produced.
The show is produced by Coquette Productions and ABC Studios (Disney). It is distributed outside the US by Disney.
Story line
The overarching story of the series is Lucy Spiller's managing of DirtNow magazine, including sending reporters and photographers out to cover interesting stories to make the magazine sell. During the first season she strikes a deal with Holt McLaren, an actor that's fallen out of public favor, to provide the magazine with gossip in exchange for good press for him. The information he provides ends up hurting people, including his girlfriend, yet he still reclaims his fame. Her most trusted paparazzi, Don Konkey, battles to keep his schizophrenia under control—going on and off his prescription drugs—yet still manages to get the necessary story. Also included is Willa McPherson, a young reporter on staff striving for a break and trying to become a better reporter, and Lucy's younger Leo who drifts in and out of her life.
